ScarletCanvas Transition Info

Questions? Let's get answers.

This page is intended to be a one-stop resource for Ohio State staff involved in the transition out of ScarletCanvas and into the Destiny One noncredit enrollment management platform. This page will be updated with your questions and answers and important dates and news you need to know. Please share this page with your colleagues as a resource during this transition period.

What's happening?

Ohio State is creating a central gateway for noncredit programming and soft-launched a new noncredit enrollment management system called Destiny One in July 2024. The enrollment management system will fully replace Canvas Catalog, the administrative (i.e., registration, gateway to payment, learner completion tracking, etc.) part of ScarletCanvas on July 1, 2025. Check out the more detailed timeline below.

Why is the university transitioning away from ScarletCanvas?

Ohio citizens and employers look to Ohio State to provide relevant workforce development and professional and lifelong learning opportunities. With hundreds of websites across the osu.edu ecosystem, unless someone has a direct URL, it's challenging to locate — let alone explore and discover — what noncredit offerings Ohio State at large has to offer in this space. In short, a central gateway for noncredit programming improves the learner experience.

Why is this transition happening now?

Interest in noncredit learning opportunities through Ohio State is growing exponentially. During 2024, Ohio State served more than 36,000 unique learners, representing a 143% increase since 2020 (representing those engaged in the ScarletCanvas noncredit LMS). Learners want to learn from Ohio State, and now is the time to provide a more modern, seamless experience.

The Provost's Office announced the timeline for creating this central gateway for noncredit learners in December 2024. All noncredit courses currently offered through ScarletCanvas will need to transition out of the platform by July 1, 2025.

What's the process to transition out of ScarletCanvas?

It might sound daunting, but it's not as bad as it sounds.  ScarletCanvas is made of up two parts: 1) the registration system called Canvas Catalog and 2) the familiar Learning Management System (LMS) called Canvas. Ohio State has two versions of Canvas — one for traditional, for-credit learners (Carmen) and one for noncredit learners (Scarlet). Unfortunately, the name Scarlet complicates communication, so that's why we'll refer to the noncredit LMS as just that — the noncredit LMS.

Course content in the noncredit LMS will remain where it is. The course profiles, registration, and all the other administrative aspects that live in the Canvas Catalog part of ScarletCanvas need to transition into Destiny One. The PCE team has created a process for the transition and is here to support you and your college every step of the way.

What should I do right now?

Review the information on this page — especially the timeline below. If you and your college have not already reached out to the PCE team about a transition plan out of ScarletCanvas, do so ASAP. Reach out to Amanda Postle.29 or email the general continuinged@osu.edu inbox.

News and updates

Canvas Subaccount Updates

Starting the week of March 24, you will see two nested sub-accounts within your (non-credit/Scarlet) Canvas subaccount: Retired and D1.

  • Inactive courses or courses where learners have been notified of closure must be moved to the Retired subaccount.
  • Going forward, our team will only work in the D1 subaccount, which will serve as the connection point for the Destiny One registration system.

Feature Sunsets

The Bulk Enroll Tool will be retired in the LMS on June 30. The +People button for manually adding users to courses will also be removed.

Note: The Professional and Continuing Education team has a process for enrolling individuals, such as grant participants or corporate partnership learners. For support, contact continuinged@osu.edu.

Communication Recommendations for College Websites

The PCE team is working on recommendations for colleges to communicate on their own websites and with learners engaged with their programming. Stay tuned for more information.

Required Actions

If you have not yet met with Professional and Continuing Education to discuss a transition plan, please reach out as soon to Amanda Postle (postle.29@osu.edu) as soon as possible.

Furthermore, the Ohio Department of Higher Education requires an audit of all non-credit certificate offerings. We are happy to work with you to complete this.
